BARR PHARMACEUTICALS INC Profile

Barr Pharmaceuticals is raising the bar and lowering the prices for many medications. The company is one of the world's largest makers of generic drugs, the cheaper knock-offs of off-patent branded pharmaceuticals. Through its Barr Laboratories subsidiary, the firm makes more than 100 generics for the North American market, with an emphasis on oral contraceptives. Barr's PLIVA subsidiary makes and sells hundreds of generic drugs, as well as active pharmaceutical ingredients, primarily in Germany and Eastern Europe. The company also develops branded drugs through its Duramed unit, including contraceptives such as Seasonale and Plan B. Barr Pharmaceuticals has agreed to be acquired by rival Teva Pharmaceutical.
