BIOVAIL CORP Profile

Specialty pharmaceutical firm Biovail specializes in making improved versions of existing drugs using its oral drug delivery technologies, such as extended release and oral disintegration formulations. Its Biovail Pharmaceuticals unit makes and sells extended release versions of GlaxoSmithKline's Wellbutrin (Wellbutrin XL) and Sanofi-Aventis' blood pressure medication Cardizem (Cardizem LA), as well as genital herpes treatment Zovirax. Biovail relies on partnerships with other drug firms to sell its drugs in the US. Through its Biovail Pharmaceuticals Canada unit, the company sells some drugs in Canada (including anti-hypertensive Tiazac and Depomed's diabetes therapy Glumetza) using its own sales force.
