As one of the largest ISPs in the US, EarthLink is trying to bridge the gap between dial-up users and high-speed Internet access. The company provides Internet connections to nearly 4 million consumer and small-business subscribers. EarthLink provides premium broadband access to about one quarter of those customers. It offers such other services as Web hosting and advertising. The company provides cable access through agreements with companies such as Time Warner Cable and Comcast Cable, and DSL access through BellSouth, Covad, AT&T, and others. Investment firms Coghill Capital, Steel Partners, and Sterling Capital each own about 10% of the company.
