Retail Ventures knows the value of budget-conscious customers. The holding company operates a pair of retail subsidiaries that cater to the thrifty in about 35 states. Its 260-store DSW chain offers discounted brand-name footwear. Off-price retailing veteran Filene's Basement runs about three dozen stores, mainly in the Northeast. In early 2008 Retail Ventures sold an 81% stake in its money-losing 113-store Value City Department Stores chain, which accounted for nearly 45% of Retail Ventures' total sales. (The sale didn't include its Value City Furniture Stores division, which is separately owned.) The Schottenstein family owns 50% of the company through its retail investment firm Schottenstein Stores Corp.
