Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) does what its name suggests -- manufactures semiconductors for an international roster of clients. SMIC provides contract manufacturing, or foundry, services to semiconductor companies; customers supply the designs, and SMIC takes care of production. Customers include chip heavyweights Broadcom, Infineon, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba. SMIC touts itself as the first China-based chip foundry to achieve volume production; indeed, the company regularly contends for the #3 spot in its industry, behind TSMC and UMC, and close to Chartered Semiconductor. SMIC gets about 40% of its sales from customers in the US.
