SUPERVALU is feeling pretty super following the acquisition of more than 1,100 supermarkets from fallen grocery giant Albertsons. Its 2006 purchase of the Albertsons' stores catapulted the chain to second place in the ttraditional grocery retail market (behind Kroger) with about 2,475 stores in some 40 US states. SUPERVALU is also one of the nation's largest food wholesalers, supplying some 2,200 grocery stores nationwide with brand-name and private-label goods. The deal added half a dozen new banners, including Albertsons, Acme Markets, and Shaw's, to SUPERVALU's store roster (which includes Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, Cub Foods, Shop 'n Save). SUPERVALU also bought Albertsons' in-store pharmacy operations.
