United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has found its calling in the silicon foundry business. Behind only neighbor and archrival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, UMC is the world's #2 silicon foundry, or contract semiconductor manufacturer. Its production services include design, engineering, manufacturing, packaging, sorting, and testing. The company has alliances and joint ventures with Elpida Memory, STMicroelectronics, and Xilinx, among others. Customers based in North America, such as AMD, Broadcom, Freescale Semiconductor, LSI, Marvell Technology, and Texas Instruments, account for nearly half of UMC's sales.
